Overview of Faculty of Medicine Education
Six-year Curriculum Supporting Studies to Become a Doctor
Kansai Medical University provides students with an education based on a 6-year curriculum to develop knowledge and skills as well as attitudes and humanity through the founding spirit of Jijinshinkyo, namely, “Benevolence, Compassion, and Empathy.”
1st Year – 2nd Year
The first step to build a foundation as a medical student
This is an important step to building a foundation. Students will study basic fields such as anatomy and physiology as well as social medicine through lectures and practical training while developing basic knowledge and skills as well as basic academic skills to study the specialized knowledge required for medical students. Over the course of two years, students will acquire the basic ability to continue life-long learning as doctors through studies of various aspects including the structure and function of the human body as well as the liberal arts, the structure of and issues with modern society, and healthcare and medicine as viewed from other fields.
3rd Year – 2nd term of the 4th Year
Enter clinical areas after acquiring basic skills
Students will finally acquire clinical knowledge by utilizing their fundamental skills. Students will gain in-depth knowledge and understanding through lectures systematically designed by organ and system, as well as through on-the-job training.
During the 2nd term of their 4th year, students will take the common achievement tests (CBT and Pre-CC OSCE), which are common tests for all medical students in Japan. Students who pass this test will be able to join actual clinical practice as Clinical Clerkship Students (in medicine).

3rd term of the 4th Year – 6th Year
Learn “practical” skills on the frontline of healthcare
Students certified as Clinical Clerkship Students will participate in a clinical clerkship (CC), a practical training program where they work as members of a medical team in clinical settings. They are divided into small groups and rotate through all departments. Then, they participate in “elective clinical training” to gain clinical experience in and outside the university and overseas for a total of 70 weeks.
Providing an Education in Attitudes and Humanity to Foster Excellent Doctors with a Rich Sense of Humanity
In the “Practice of Medical Professionalism (1st to 4th years)”, students will study the history and social role of medicine, life/medical ethics, and proficiency in communication in addition to acquiring knowledge and skills. In multidisciplinary collaborative education, students will learn common issues along with students from other departments to study the basics of team medical care. In “Introduction to Clinical Clerkship (1st to 4th years)”, students will take part in “White Coat Day”, early medical care training, nursing training, patient escort training, and medical interview practice/training to learn actual medical care in clinical settings from an early stage.
